The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), expressing concern over the safety of Kashmiri students stuck in various parts of the country due to the lockdown, has demanded the central government to provide adequate measures for them to be able to go back home securely.

Anti-Kashmir and Islamophobic sentiments amid many right-wing groups have made Kashmiri students the target of most of their attacks for some time now. Such outfits have been using the coronavirus crisis to further their hatred towards Kashmiris.

SFI has demanded the government to immediately ensure the safety and security of these students, in addition to the local administrations providing adequate measures to enable them to travel back home, hassle free and free of cost.

SFI has also submitted a letter in this regard to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. We republish here the entire text of the letter.

Read the letter below:

To
The Prime Minister,
Prime Minister’s Office,
South Block, Raisina Hill,
New Delhi 110011.

Sub: Regarding the need for adequate measures for Kashmiri Students, enabling them to travel back to their homeland without any problem.

Sir,

The Central Executive Committee of Students’ Federation of India expresses grave concern over the safety and security of Kashmiri students, who are studying in various parts of the country and stuck due to the nationwide lockdown.

Time and again we have seen how Kashmiri students have been targeted by rightwing mobs in several parts of the country, along with Islamophobic and anti-Kashmir statements emerging from various communal outfits. Various Islamophobic outfits are using this sensitive moment to capitalise on hatred and targeting Kashmiris for their identity. The present time bears no difference.

Several Kashmiri students are stuck away from home during this intense lockdown phase, unable to gather resources for sustainence or travel back home. They are deprived of the basic facilities such as food and ration.

The CEC of SFI demands that the Government of India must immediately ensure the safety and security of these students across the country, in tandem with the local administrations and provide adequate measures enabling them to travel back to their homeland without any problem and free of cost.

Yours sincerely,
V P Sanu (President)
Mayukh Biswas (General Secretary)
