SFI Condemns The New Education Policy

Student Struggle Editorial Team

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has condemned the myriad changes brought about in the country’s education sector in the form of the New Education Policy of the BJP-led central government. Calling it undemocratic and a bid to push centralisation in education, SFI, in its official statement says that the government has used the time of the pandemic to to take anti-people decisions, including pushing the NEP. “Now that it has come, NEP 2020 looks the perfect recipe to create a pool of semi-skilled labour, jack-of-all-trades who can be used according to the needs of the market without much resistance,” wrote Dipsita Dhar, the All India Joint Secretary of SFI. The organisation, through its statement, has declared that they will carry out extensive campaigns against the move, as part of which it has called out to the country’s student community to join them.

We are republishing the entire text of the statement here. Read below:

Reject Anti-Student New Education Policy

The central government has turned the pandemic into a golden opportunity to implement all its anti-people policies. The passage of the New Education Policy (NEP) has become the latest example of this. Massive protests and criticism from across the country had erupted over the draft of the new education policy. The anti-democratic nature of its content, its centralised nature and its recommendations for radical privatisation were all questioned. People from various walks of life demanded that such an education policy not be implemented and that more extensive discussions and consultations be held.

Ignoring all that, the Union Cabinet has taken advantage of an extraordinary situation and passed the New Education Policy. Strong struggles must be waged against the new education policy that has been formulated to overthrow the federal system of the country, deviate from constitutional values and deny the independent nature of research. SFI will undertake such extensive campaigns across the country in coming days.

Do not assume that the renaming of the Ministry will cover up the dangerous elements in the policy. The Modi government has done something similar to smuggling in a democratic society. The SFI Central Executive Committee expresses strong resentment and protest at the ugly move to implement the extremely anti-student and anti-democratic new education policy in the dark. Keeping physical distance, SFI activists will organise protests across the nation. There will also be an active campaign using the social media platforms. Along with that, SFI is also calling for an all India campaign against anti-people Modi Sarkar with the slogan “Bharat Chodo Chatra birodhi modi sarkar.”
