The Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in their press release vehemently condemned the Central Government’s plans for Hindi Imposition into Indian institutes and Job recruitment procedures. SFI urged the Union Ministry to reject the recommendation of the committee and uphold the multi-plurality of this country. The statement further says, “The Amit shah run official language committee of the parliament has come with a strange recommendation that the medium of instruction Higher Education Institutions Should be mandatorily in Hindi. The committee has recommended that “Use of Hindi as a medium of instruction and other activities should be Hindi in all technical and non-technical institutions in the country and use of English should be made optional,”. Once again, “The Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan” Agenda of the RSS backed BJP Govt have been exposed”
SFI added that India being a country with a multi-linguistic and multicultural social scenario, Hindi has never been practiced by almost half of its population. The common misconception that Hindi is the national language of the country has put fuel to this fire. As a language, Hindi is beautiful and has contributed a lot to Indian Literature . But that doesn’t make this language of Upper Class, Upper Class Elites qualify as the “Single Indian Language”. We shouldn’t forget the fact that Hindi is not the single national language. It’s an important regional language just like Bangla, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, or any of the other 22 national languages of India. Let us all have pride in our mother tongue and not bow down to hegemony.
SFI is of the view that the ‘Hindianisation’ of Indian Academia as suggested by the committee would put the scholarly life of non-Hindi speaking students into an abyss. The mandatory imposition of Hindi extends even to competitive exams and Job Recruitment Procedures which will further impact the chances for upward social mobility for students from socially and economically marginalized sections of society.
